At Dental Serenity in Dumfries, VA, we believe prevention and protection is an important part of optimal oral health. For this reason, we recommend mouthguards for certain patients at our Dumfries dental office. Patients who are involved in sports/athletic activities should always wear a sports mouthguard while participating. Patients that experience bruxism, TMJ or clenching/grinding can also benefit from wearing a night guard.
Mouthguards for Sports
For patients that play sports or partake in athletic activities, we recommend a custom mouthguard. They are custom-made per patient to fit properly and comfortably and protect your teeth, lips, tongue and jaw. The custom sports guard will be worn on the upper teeth and also provides protection for the lower teeth, tongue, lips and jaw.
Patients that neglect to wear a mouthguard while participating in sports have a higher risk for traumatic dental injuries. These injuries range from chips and cracks to broken and dislodged teeth. These injuries can result in costly restorative dental procedures.
At Dental Serenity, we offer night guards for patients that experience nighttime clenching and grinding. They are worn only while sleeping and are designed to fit comfortably.
Patients that experience nighttime grinding and clenching that do not wear a night guard are at higher risk for chipped, cracked, decayed and even missing teeth. Continued clenching and grinding can result in the need for fillings, crowns and even dentures or dental implants.
